Kids today are missing out on critical nutrients they need for growth and good health such as calcium, potassium and vitamin D because they aren’t choosing nutrient-rich foods. But there’s good news – flavored milk provides the same powerful package of nine essential nutrients as white milk, and kids will drink more milk when it’s flavored!

Studies show that children who drink flavored milk meet more of their nutrient needs; do not consume more added sugar, fat or calories; and are not heavier than non-milk drinkers.

A nutrient-rich option
Drinking low-fat or fat-free milk, in flavors like chocolate and strawberry, can help children get their three daily servings of milk as recommended by the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Plus, when kids drink nutrient-rich flavored milk, they improve their overall diets.

Several leading health and nutrition organizations, including the Dietary Guidelines, recognize the valuable role that milk, including low-fat and fat-free flavored milk, can play in meeting daily nutrient needs. They also recognize the small amount of added sugars in flavored milk is an acceptable trade-off for the nutrients provided.

Good for kids
A few schools and activist groups are looking to remove low-fat chocolate milk from cafeterias, but many health professionals agree this could do more nutritional harm than good. Chocolate milk is the most popular milk choice in schools, and kids will drink less milk and get fewer nutrients if it's eliminated from the lunch room.

Keeping nutrient-rich, flavored milk on the school menu helps ensure children get key vitamins and minerals that they need for strong bones and healthy bodies.
