Low fat dairy foods have been recognized as one of the “food groups to encourage” buy the 2005 US Dietary Guidelines for Americans since US diets are low in calcium, magnesium and potassium, all of which are in milk. Older children especially, are not consuming enough of the nutrient rich dairy foods to get their recommended amount of calcium. According to the USDA, nearly 9 out of 10 teenage girls and 7 out of 10 teenage boys do not get enough calcium each day.
Simply offering milk at school meals is not enough. School nutrition programs are challenged to offer milk they way kids like it – cold, attractively displayed, in easy-open appealing packages, in a variety of flavors and in multiple locations such as vending machines and a la carte service.
