Dairy Nourishes America (DNA)

This program, part of the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, increases access to dairy foods for people who are struggling to feed their families. Dairy organizations can select one or more of the business models below.

Through collective reporting, the Innovation Center will be able to share the overall impact that the U.S. dairy community is making in feeding hungry people. Individual companies will be able track their contributions as part of their brand’s commitment to social responsibility.

Who can apply?

Dairy organizations, such as dairy farmers, dairy cooperatives and independent dairy processors, can engage in any of these business models:

  • Milk Purchase Model – Consistent purchase of a supply of milk by a local food bank from a processor.
  • Cheese Purchase Model – Consistent purchase of a supply of cheese from a processor by a local food bank
  • Guaranteed Donation Model – Processor commitment to consistently donate dairy foods to food banks. Learn more about getting reimbursed for donated milk with the Milk Donation Reimbursement Program.

Food banks and retailers can get involved through retail rescue/recovery when cooperatives, processors and/or retailers collaborate with food banks to redirect an oversupply of dairy products to food banks.

Retail, industry and consumers can also get involved through the Great American Milk Drive. Donate online at milklife.com/give. Donations to the Great American Milk Drive provide funds to purchase milk for Feeding America food bank clients.
